THIS SPECIMEN COSISTS OF BLUE GREY FLINT/CHERT WITH A COATING OF CREAMY BROWN COLOURED PLOMBIERITE.

PLOMBIERITE IS A RARE HYDRATED CALCIUM SILICATE MINERAL. ITS PRESCENCE AT THIS LOCALITY IS DUE TO AN UNUSUAL CHEMICAL REACTION BETWEEN A DOLERITE PLUG INTRUSION AND THE SURROUNDING CHALK/LIMESTONE COUNTRY ROCK, WHICH ALSO CONTAINS FLINT/CHERT NODULES.

THE SPECIMEN WAS COLLECTED BY THE LATE HARRY J FOY, WHO WAS THE MOST EMINENT IRISH MINERAL COLLECTORS OF THE LAST CENTURY.
